About the British Tinnitus Association (BTA)
Since it’s foundation in 1979, under the aegis of the RNID, and becoming an independent charity in 1991, the BTA has grown immensely. It now employs six members of staff in Sheffield and publishes over 30 information sheets and booklets on tinnitus and related subjects for lay and professional people.
The Association is supported by a team of eminent professional advisers, all of whom are tinnitus specialists. So what do we do?
The BTA produces a quarterly magazine called Quiet containing reader’s experiences, information on current research, group news and professional advice for people with tinnitus. There are around 50 self-help groups, mainly run by people with tinnitus. The groups hold meetings and often provide telephone support at a local level.
The Association has a FREEPHONE tinnitus helpline, located at the office in Sheffield where callers can speak to the friendly and experienced staff, in confidence. The helpline operates during office hours but, outside these times, callers can leave their details on an answer machine and then be sent a free information pack
All members of the public have free access to tinnitus information that can be downloaded from the BTA website. For those without internet access, information is available through the post.
Membership of the BTA costs a modest annual fee of just £15 for those in the UK and £20 for those overseas and those who join the Association receive the quarterly journal, Quiet.
The BTA aims to raise awareness of the condition, but also aims to help support people who work with tinnitus patients. We run bi-annual Tinnitus Counselling Training Seminars, and an Annual Conference.
Along with members of staff from the Hearing Services Department of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, the BTA runs Therapy Days for professionals to help them help their patients and improve services around the UK. The Counselling Training Seminars, BTA Annual Conference and Therapy Days have all been accredited by the British Academy of Audiology. Bursaries are available for tinnitus training to professionals who wish to improve their knowledge and treatment of the condition. For more details of forthcoming events, click here.
To ensure details of hospital services for people with tinnitus are up-to-date, a questionnaire is sent to all Audiology/ENT Departments in the UK, annually, along with a pack full of details of BTA publications, copies of Quiet etc.
The Association also holds meetings especially for younger people with tinnitus and has a small team of younger volunteers who have tinnitus themselves, who can provide one-to-one support over the phone or by email.
The BTA has also produced two educational packs for Primary and Secondary school pupils, in order to raise awareness of how our hearing mechanisms work, how to protect our ears etc
The BTA is dedicated to promoting Better Tinnitus Awareness!
